On May 16, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services ended a temporary recommendation that infants in certain counties receive an early dose of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine.

The recommendation was issued in April to help protect infants during measles outbreaks in seven Michigan counties. Now that those outbreaks have subsided, the temporary recommendation has ended.

This week, Michigan news outlets reported on the change, prompting questions online like:

• Why did the recommendation change?
• What are current MMR vaccine recommendations in Michigan?
• Is “natural immunity” to measles safer than vaccination?

Remind your community today: MDHHS recommends the MMR vaccines for all children. Kids should receive their first dose at 12 to 15 months and their second dose at 4 to 6 years.
